It’s the day after the primary election, but despite a low voter turnout there were some big surprises and some cliffhangers even in big races that may not be decided for another week or so.

Status of vote counts

Boards of elections across the state will begin counting hundreds of thousands of mail-in ballots Thursday morning but election results are not expected until sometime next week. Find out why in this story from The Baltimore Banner’s Adam Willis.

The Democratic nomination for governor and multiple local primary races hang in the balance.

Dan Cox is projected to win the Republican nomination in Maryland’s gubernatorial race. The first-term state delegate beat out former state Commerce Secretary Kelly Schultz, who was backed by many Republican leaders, including Governor Larry Hogan.

As of Wednesday morning, latest election results show Wes Moore in the lead for the gubernatorial Democratic nominee and The Associated Press estimates that more than 50 percent of votes have been counted.

As of Wednesday afternoon the race for the Baltimore State’s Attorney’s Office was still too close to call. In the three-way Democratic contest, Ivan Bates had a sizeable lead over the incumbent, Marilyn Mosby who is seeking a third term. Thiru Vignarajah trailed them both.

Mosby is facing a September federal trial on charges of perjury for making false statements to purchase two vacation homes in Florida.

It appears Baltimore County Executive Johnny Olszewski will be facing off against former Republican Delegate Pat McDonough in the fall election. WYPR’s John Lee reports both held healthy leads in their primaries.
